Flamengo seek Santos loan deal

Rio de Janeiro, Jul 17 (IANS): Flamengo have reportedly given English football club Arsenal until Thursday to approve a six-month loan deal for Brazilian defender Andre Santos.

Santos is contracted to the north London club until 2015 but has managed just 23 first-team appearances since his 2011 move from Fenerbahce, reports Xinhua.

He completed a three-month loan deal with Brazilian club Gremio in May and Flamengo coach Mano Menezes is keen to prolong the 30-year-old's stay in Brazil.

The left-back represented Flamengo in 2005 and 2006, helping the club win the Copa do Brasil in his second year.

Flamengo are currently 11th in Brazil's Serie A championship with nine points from seven matches.

Menezes, who replaced 1994 World Cup winner Jorginho as Flamengo coach last month, has made clear his intention to bolster his squad ahead of the close of the transfer window July 20.
