Powell loses 100 metres to Gay

Lausanne (Switzerland), Jul 5 (IANS/CMC): Jamaica's Asafa Powell lost to American Tyson Gay who continued his world best form by winning the 100 m in 9.79 seconds at the Diamond League meet here.

World-record holder Powell Thursday clocked a season's best 9.88 for second place behind Gay who now owns the three fastest times in the world this season - adding the 9.79 (with a barely legal 2.0 wind) to a 9.75 and a 9.86, reports CMC.

American Mike Rodgers was third in a season's best 9.96 in an event dominated by Caribbean athletes.

Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis was fourth in 9.97 seconds and Jamaica's Nickel Ashmeade finished in 5th place in 10.05 seconds. Kemar Bailey-Cole also of Jamaica was a close sixth with the same time. Trinidad and Tobago's Richard Thompson was next in 10.14.

Gay's latest performance is expected to put more scrutiny on Usain Bolt, who runs a 200 in Paris Saturday.

Bolt's best 100 time this season is a pedestrian 9.94 at Jamaican nationals.

He was beaten by American Justin Gatlin in Rome June 6.

Jamaica's Jason Young was beaten into second place by Dutchman Churandy Martina in 200 metres.

In a race minus the big guns Young seemed to have had it won some forty metres out but was overtaken by a fast finishing Martina in a season's best clocking 20.01 secs.

Young clocked 20.20, also a season's best, with Norway's Jaysuma Saidy Ndure third in 20.40.

Jamaica's Mario Forsythe finished sixth in 20.75 seconds.
