I was stopped at US airports because of my surname: Irrfan

My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist.

Mar 9 : This catch dialogue from Shah Rukh Khan's movie "My Name is Khan" must have reverberated through actor Irrfan Khan's mind when he was stopped "several times" by the immigration authorities at the US airports.

"It's humiliating. They don't even disclose the reason," says Irrfan, who is one of the most recognised actors from India in Hollywood having worked in Oscar-winner  'Slumdog Millionaire', 'Life of Pi' and crowd pleaser 'Spider-Man'.

"Actually, I don't use my surname Khan in films, but in passports, surname and religion are required. I was stopped not once, but several times at airports in the US.

"Once I told the immigration people, why do you issue visas, if you don't want to give us entry, and the man scowled at me saying --Are you threatening me?," Irrfan said on Rajat Sharma's show 'Aap Ki Adalat' to be telecast on India TV.

Irrfan was detained twice at the US airports-- at Los Angeles airport in 2008 and at New York airport in 2009.

But, he is not the only celebrity to face this problem. Shah Rukh, his co-star and producer in 'Billu', was infamously stopped at the Newark airport in 2009. He faced a similar problem last year at the New York airport.

Other prominent Indians who have gone through a similar ordeal are former President APJ Abdul Kalam, John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukhesh and Kabir Khan to name a few.
The actor, who is currently starring in Tigmanshu Dhulia's 'Sahib, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns', says he is tired of facing this whenever he travels to US.

"The policemen with big guns just take you to a room and ask you to sit. they don't allow you to speak to anybody, nor use cellphones. And after long waits, they come and simply say --'Go, please go'.

"So now, I have told my hosts clearly that if I am stopped at the airport, I will just buy a ticket and return to India," said Irrfan.

Talking about his role of a older Pi in Ang Lee's film, which won four Oscars this year, Irrfan said it was quite challenging.

"My character was such that the fate of the film finally depended on my performance," said Irrfan, whose voice-over plays an important role in the visually-stunning movie.

Despite his unconventional looks, Irrfan has managed to create a reputation as a formidable actor in both Bollywood and in Hollywood. The actor believes most of the good actors are not great lookers.

"Most of the superstars are conventionally not goodlookers, whether Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan sahib or Dilip Sahib. I am not comparing myself with them. I am only exploring the possibility that the inner personality of an actor counts, not good looks.

"It appears as if Hollywood is mesmerised with my looks, but for me, language does not matter. Language does not make one an elite. In 'Life Of Pi', I was asked to use Canadian-French-Indian accent."

From his huge body of work, Irrfan describes Vishal Bhardwaj directed 'Maqbool' and Dhulia's 'Paan Singh Tomar' among his favourite films.

Agree with Jayarama. Frequent visitors to US know and appreciate that security is very tight at all border crossings. No-one gets any VIP treatment, its just the way it is.

Come to think of it, other International Airports are also getting just as strict. I believe its a good thing and a very small price to pay for personal safety!!!

People make it a big issue, if one or two innocent people interogated or suffer because of investigating agencies. But the same people are not bothered when hundreds- thousands of innocent people get killed by terrorist activities. ( Example Mahesh Bhatt, Teesta, Sharuk, Diggy etc, so called secular people)

Stop this non sense. It is not b'coz of your name but it is their duty and procedure. As you mention John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukhesh are not Khan's. Still they detained. Even our Ex Defense Minister: Mr. George Fernandies was force d to remove his pants. So, these khans are not a big deal. As you khans experienced and admit it happened not once are twice, but frequently! So, if you are not comfortable with these things, then why the hell you people going to US? Did we or anybody force you? You are going for your benefit. To sell or promote your product. Not for the benefit of the public or country. Then why you complaint. If you don't like don't go. Use your common sense and go to Dubai man. It is much cheaper too. Or you go to Nepal. Very nice place and no hassles.
You, celebrities are having too much head weight. But you must understand that nobody is higher than the law of the land. Even Dr. AJP Abdul Kalam has experienced the same. But he never complaint or make any issue.
People like you, spoiling Indians name, internationally. Idiots! It is a labor attitude like Air India passengers buying the tickets and when they have problems, crying in front of the media.
By doing this you people won't get any sympathy but proved that you are a stupid!

India is used to worshiping its celebrities. If you land at a small airport and you are flagged up-it is the duty of immigration officials to clear any doubts.

Great comments of global citizens who understand the safety of people except this Irfan or SRK these guys have no clue other than thier ego issues they think they came from heaven and every one has to salute them. Both these men are just a actors and nothing else. So be it a actor and respect the law of US or stay in India with the same attitude of yours. US will not lose anything except you lose your bread of not going there.

I am not aware what type of scrutiny Mr. Irrfan Khan faced. However, I have crosed US immigration and many US International airports several times. As I see, the travellers are properly guided to follow the security and immigration check points, and travellers follow these guidelines regardless of their individual backgrounds. For example everyone including little children and babies has to deposit shoes and each and every belongings like hand held electronics devices, laptops, camera, keychins, pens, belts , baby strollers etc...for security scanning at the security check point. Absolutely no liquid, including baby milk can be carried in hand bags, but can be cheched in the chech-in bags. Prescribed medication and baby feed formula, milk can be carried in to aircrafts, which is handled differently at security check points. Every passenger will face US immigration and customs at the International arrival points and there could be a wait time. Dozen or more times I have traveled in recent years with my family, as we followed the security and immigration guideline, we found system is fair, but may be little time consuming. There could be random additional interrogations. I believe that system is designed this way, and has no reason for any concerns.

You must salute security officials that they are doing their duty to keep people of USA safe.

A terrorist had been caught carrying a bomb in socks on Dec 25th 2009. His plan was to kill people on air on Christmas day. When your people are doing like this what is the need of blaming security officials? You need to cooperate.

Its not becasue you are mulim even I am christians with last name Pinto still stop me and ask me to complete the process. US can't afford to give you special treatment and put citizens to risk due to many terrors like to bomb or kill US citizens. So follow the land process or sit in India. don't cry for nothing. It is great to go such security check to make everyone life safer than die in the 9/11. We Indians never satisfied with transparent life rather like to roll into the mud of corruption like India.

It is not only you but most of us were quizzed by US authorities, that's how they were able to stop further attack on US. It is important to us to visit US and the authorities there are least worried about our feelings but the security of their country is a priority to them.
