Billiards: Advani to Meet Russell in Final


Leeds, Oct 27 (IANS): India's Pankaj Advani set up another title clash with reigning champion Mike Russell in the World billiards championship (time format) here Saturday.

In the semi-finals, the 27-year old Bangalore-based Advani, a former multiple champion, overcame compatriot Dhruv Sitwala, the 40-year old from Mumbai, 1,381-867 with breaks of 167, 205, 257, paving the way.

Russell, who won the first of his 10 professional titles in 1989, was again in imperious form as he demolished Australian Matthew Bolton 1,562-1,028 with breaks of 740, 384, 156 and 100.

The 43-year old Russell and Advani last met in the title round of the timed format in 2009 when the Indian won. The met twice in the points format finals with the Qatar-based Englishman winning both.

Sitwala, whose best break was a 96, found himself in a catch-up situation right through the four-hour match as Advani, a former champion, consolidated on a strong start to emerge worthy winner.

Mike Russell (Qatar) bt Matthew Bolton (Australia) 1562 (740, 100, 156, 384) - 1028 (114, 264, 112, 125, 157). Pankaj Advani (India) bt Dhruv Sitwala 1381 (167, 205, 257) - 867 (96, 91, 86).
