Kannur (Kerala), Oct 24 (IANS): In just 20 minutes that the legendry Diego Maradona held centre stage, he danced, sang and demonstrated jaw-dropping football skills to win thousands of hearts at the Municipal Stadium here Wednesday.

Over 50,000 fans started pouring in since early morning for a glimpse of the Argentine star. There were thunderous cheers as he walked into the stadium around 11.30 a.m.

Maradona is in Kerala on an invite from his industrialist friend Bobby Chemmanur. The footballer could not hide his excitement. He danced to the music and showered flying kisses to his fans from the stage.

Then came rolling, one after the another, over a dozen footballs towards Maradona. Each was rocketed into the crowds. But not before the icon manoeuvred them deftly to amuse his fans.

Amid cheers, Maradona and former India football captain I.M. Vijayan headed a football between them for a few minutes. The Argentine will turn 52 Tuesday. His birthday was celebrated in advance here.

He cut a cake weighing over 30 kg and shaped like a football ground with a football in the middle. It was prepared by Sheen Bakery here.  Among those present at the function were Home Minister T. Radhakrishnan, Sports Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar and a number of legislators.

"It's a great honour for the God of football to have come to Gods's own country," Vijayan said. Maradona arrived here Tuesday from Kochi and will take a flight to Dubai from Kozhikode Wednesday evening.

Prasheesh Kumar Mumbai - Cricket is purely British game but football is semi Indian. Because there is mention of football in Mahabharath Balaparva, the story says- Kaurava & Pandavas as Children played football and when the ball fell in a deep well Dronacharya teaches how to take out ball with his arrow. Even in Kannada Jemini Bharatha it is stated that- Bheemanu Bhandhara Runda Chendadidanu ( here Bhandha means impudent-arrogant-rascal, Runda means severed head and Chendadu means play with ball. In ancient India there was a cruel gory practice of severing head of enemies and playing football with that head by victorious King & soldiers.)
Whatever it is, Football is truly a game of warriors because of its fast action, requiring too much physical strength, endurance, quick intelligence and killer instinct near Goal mouth. Hockey also comes under same category. May be for the same reason in India majority of d Football & hockey players belong to Shoodra Castes, or Muslims or Christians. Virtually Brahmins are nill in these two games. I was both Hockey & Football player for Mysore University.
Cricket is called Brahmin game due to its Lazy approach, too much TALK, too much DRAMA just like applying Spit to Ball and rubbing it on pant every time, pounding ground with bat, rectifying Pads, Gloves, helmet after every ball, taking strike slowly. Such slow-motion drama is not allowed in football or Hockey once the game begins.
In England Cricket was played by only landlords, Dukes, & princes. These Landlords/Princes were batting whole day and their servants were bowling & fielding whole day. Full pant allowed only for Landlord/prince and only half-pants for servants.
This caste & Class mentality is shown in Indian cricket even today. Only players of Upper caste get chance in Team India, and Dalits like Vinod Kambli is sidelined with lame pretext even though he was as talented as Tendulkar. Dalit Kambli's offence was- he got converted to Buddhism.

Ravi Shenava your are correct. But Football is popular in 175 countries out of total 196 countries of this world including majority of Asian Countries. So Maradona is God of Football for 175 countries and not in just 9-10 countries unlike Cricket. Football & Cricket both Originated in England (Polali Chendu is our Desi Version.)
India went on winning Gold in Olympic Hockey till only India, Pakistan and England were playing Hockey. But when Australia, Newzealand, Holland, Germany, Korea & japan took Hockey seriously India went down to 5th place. So as regards Cricket also if European Countries, China, Japan, Korea, USA, Russia take it seriously, where will be India ? Kalmadi & Co - please answer.
In Mumbai also in all the "Times Shield" Playing Teams like Tata Sports, Mafatlal, Orkay, Customs, Central Bank, we find 30% of the players are Mangaloreans, 30% Goans, 30% Keralites, and only 10% rest of India. This shows that all the West Coast people can excel in Football rather than in any other Games, because as you said they have inbuilt talent required for Football but not exploited locally, whether some Kokke people agree or not. But in Mumbai for Week-End Football matches at Cooperage stadium half of the spectators are Mangalorean Tuluvas and Catholics, which proves its popularity among Mangaloreans. I have played football for 7 years for my Bank in Half-Back position, and I know the beauty of this Game as you have rightly said only those who have actually played Football can only know its fierce beauty.

Mr.Mohameed is there anything wrong in Jaimini's comment. Why did you use harsh word for genuine humourous comment.I appriciate Keralites atleast they are encouraging other games like football where whole nation is cricket crazy. As he observed there will not be any more Maradona or Tendulkars. They are living legends.

    @ Ravi. B. Shenava, MANGALORE.

MARADONA WILL NEVER COME TO MANGALORE. NOBODY WILL GIVE IMPORTANCE TO SUCH KIND OF PEOPLE.

MANGALORE PEOPLES ARE EDUCATED AND BRILLIANT. THEY WILL NOT BLINDLY SUPPORT SOMEONE AS A GOD OF GAMES.

All over the world Football is called as "KING OF GAMES" for its beauty & elegance, and it is a Number One game in 140 countries, but Cricket is played only in Nine countries seriously out of that Four are in Indian Sub-continent).
Only those who have played real Football they only know its beauty. ( Mangaloreans rarely play Football so they do not know its beauty. Bundar Kya Jaane Adrak Ka Swad ?)

In the South of Tulunadu we have Kerala which is Football Crazy.
In the North we have GOA which is also equally Football Crazy.
But in the Center we have Tulunadu which do not have Football fad even though we share same Physique, same Food habit, Same Climate and same Culture, but why ? In our South-east we have Coorg who are Hockey lovers and created many International Players. But why we do not share same sports love ?

Has Cricket (that too Under-Arm) killed all other Games in our district ?
When will the great Maradona will come and play int Mangalore ?

I am a big fan of God of cricket Tendulkar and God of Football Maradona. And for your special information, I am a Keralite.i have high regards towards culture, food habits and hard working nature of Malayalis..Mr Mubin..24x7 seriousness is not good for health.Sometimes humour should be there.TRY TO RESPECT IT or KEEP QUIET..

It was a welcome change to see an international sport star visit India, especially Kerala, when the entire country seems to be obsessed with cricket. Most Indians develop aversion to foreigners at a young age as a result of exaggerated stories of exploitation taught in educational institutions, which lead to jingoism and hatred for foreigners. Gradually, this attitude is undergoing a change with the government and movie-makers welcoming foreign artistes.
