Serbian Muslim Football Fans Protest Anti-Islam Film

Belgrade, Sep 22 (IANS/AKI): Thousands of football fans in Serbia's Muslim-majority Sandzak region held a peaceful march against a film deemed insulting to Islam.

Supporters of the Torcida Sandzak football club in Novi Pazar town Friday waved banners that read "Freedom for Palestine, Afghanistan and Libya" and "The Prophet is in my heart".

There was a heavy police presence at the march, where protesters also waved flags of Turkey and Bosnia.

"The Islamic community in Serbia did not take part in organising the protest but it has its full support, as Muslims have the right to protest against such insults," said Sandzak's mufti Muamer Zukorlic.

The low-budget film "Innocence of Muslims" allegedly insults Prophet Mohammed.

The film sparked a wave of violent protests in Muslim-majority countries. The US ambassador in Libya and three embassy staffers were killed in an attack on the US consulate in Benghazi.
