Gunfight in Kashmir


Srinagar, Sep 1 (IANS): A gunfight between separatist guerrillas and the security forces started Saturday in Kashmir's Ganderbal district, police said here.

"Troops of 24 Rashtriya Rifles and the state police surrounded a forest area in Chattergul village of Ganderbal district early this morning following information about the presence of militants there," a senior police officer told IANS.

"When the militants were challenged, they started firing at the security forces triggering an encounter which is still going on," he said. Chattergul is 40 km from here.

Unconfirmed reports said one guerrilla has been killed in the gunfight.

There is no official word so far on the exact number of guerrillas engaged in the gunfight.
