Clinton to Attend Late Ghanaian President's Funeral


Washington, Aug 10 (IANS): US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will attend the funeral of late Ghanaian president John Evans Atta Mills who died July 24 following illness at the age of 68.

US President Barack Obama Thursday named Clinton as the head of a delegation to attend the state funeral of late Ghanaian president, Xinhua reported. The funeral is to be held Friday.

Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Johnnie Carson, who is currently on an Africa tour with Clinton, is also part of the US delegation along with General Carter Ham, commander of the US Africa Command, the White House said in a statement.

Obama, who travelled to Ghana in 2009 in his only trip to Africa as president, has praised Mills for promoting economic growth and democracy in the country.
