Danish Kaneria Cleared of Spot-fixing Charges

Islamabad, Jun 6 (IANS): Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria was cleared in a spot-fixing investigation of a local Twenty 20 tournament after a local inquiry committee of the Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) declared him innocent, official said Tuesday.

The inquiry committee of KCCA, the main cricket association of Pakistan's southern city of Karachi, cleared Kaneria of any further investigations in an ongoing probe into a match of the "National Super Eights Twenty20" held this year.

Kaneria, who was already facing cricket corruption charges in the United Kingdom, was blamed in March this year that he deliberately quit the play against a weak team to give an opportunity to the opponents to win the match, Xinhua reported.

After losing the match, Kaneria's team was knocked out of the tournament. During the match he bowled just four deliveries before going off the field with a fitness problem.

The KCCA, which is one of the biggest affiliated units of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), launched an inquiry after the manager of the team suspected some players had spot-fixed the match and deliberately under-performed.

Kaneria appeared before the members of the inquiry committee and showed them the medical proofs of his fitness problems.

"Kaneria was interviewed; he also submitted a medical certificate to support his claim. The inquiry committee also spoke to the manager and convinced him that Kaneria is no longer required in the investigations," said the statement by the inquiry committee.

Kaneria, 31, who has taken 261 wickets in 61 Test matches, have not played for Pakistant August 2010 when he played against England.

Though he was cleared by the KCCA, the PCB has not cleared him for national selection as he was named in a spot-fixing investigation by the UK police.

Because of those charges Kaneria is also facing a spot-fixing inquiry by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and is due to attend a hearing this month.

The ECB launched the inquiry against Kaneria after his teammate at Essex country cricket club, Mervyn Westfield was jailed in February after he confessed that he had accepted 6,000 pounds to spot-fix during a county match.

During the hearing in the court in UK, Westfield's lawyer claimed that Kaneria had introduced him to the alleged match fixers.
