Mangalore, Apr 8: One person died and four were injured in an accident that occured near Kottata Chowki flyover here on Sunday April 8.

The accident occured at around 6 am when a KSRTC Volvo bus rammed into a bike, killing one and injuring four.

The deceased has been identified as Rupesh Shetty (26), a surveyor with MRPL. He was returning from night duty on his bike when the accident took place.

Among the injured, one has been admitted to AJ Hospital and the rest escaped with minor bruises. All the injured were in the bus.

Sources said the bus driver drove on the wrong side of the road and hit the bike. It is said that he tried to avoid hitting the bike, but in vain, and the bus rolled over the side of the road.

The bus was plying to Kundapur from Bangalore via Mangalore.

I understand that a passenger suddenly requested the driver to take the service road when the driver was about to take the Flyover at a standard speed.
KSRTC drivers are usually much safer than private bus drivers.
Moreover the driver was probably driving the entire night.
Would it be fair to completely blame it on the poor bus driver?

One more precious life lost due to the rash and negligent driving of a bus driver. Rupesh Shetty your life is cut short. May your soul rest in eternal peace. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends and colleagues. The pictures by Spoorthi Ullal is very touching and I feel how can the driver in the Volvo bus with full of passengers can hit a motor bike and fall on its side. This is a bizzare case and only after a thorough inquiry is finished we cannot presume anything. Anything must have happened at that moment.

Please do not just blame people for their errors comitted whether by negligence or accidental. We need to find the root cause and find solutions for this. According to me, these accidents may come down once the four laning projects is completed. Driving in mangalore and udupi districts has always been on the harsher side, but i feel ksrtc drivers are far safer and more experienced than the private busses.

I believe the ratio for road accidents has hiked for 2012(i.e. quiet a number of Bus/ Car accidents, Two wheeler accidents, pedestriants injured or killed).I think its high time for RTO or who ever so concerned start having tougher laws.

People are irresponsible - there is absolutely no accountability - basically dirty, corrupt, shameless and cheap. There is no way out of this mess. It is only going to get worse.

It is distrubing to read frequent accidents and loss of life on the road in twin districts.

I appreciate valued comments from various readers. In my opinon unless corruption in RTO is controlled and a person with vision and authority (Daredevil, non fearing to any politician) like our ex DC Mr. PONNURAJ comes in RTO derpartment, it is very difficult to control these drives.

1.Example for height of corruption in RTO

IDP (International Driving Permit) cannot be issued without person being personally visiting the RTO's office. Many may be surprised to know with a help of a friend I managed to get IDP for just Rs.2000 from USA. I have all the reason to believe if anyones licence is cancelled it will be not very difficult revalidate or reissue.

    2. Loop Holes in the Law. Drivers normally runaway from the scence, how much does police department do to arrest them and put behind bars. I heard (which may not correct) most of the time drivers surrender with bail application with help of vehicle owners, which inturn give them a confidence even with accident they can get away.

    3. Driving manners

Honestly accept how many of us follow correct traffic rules.(I agree it is not practicle when all heavy vehicle driver voilating it)

    a) Now dividers been put between the road, to save some distance\fuel many bikers\autos and even car & bus drive in wrong direction.
b)Early morning and late night when traffic is minimum drivers drive in oneway or jumping the signal.
    c) THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH SIGN BOARDS AND ALSO THEY ARE NOT PROMINENTLY VISIBLE

BUT I AM SURE IN COMING YEARS ALL THESE PROBLEMS WILL BE ADDRESSED, PEOPLE WILL BE MORE CAUTIOUS ABOUT SAFTY AND THING WILL BECOME BETTER

    GOD BLESS MANGALORE\UDUPI.... KARNATAKA.....INDIA

NH 17 (old)from kundapur to mangalore around 100 kms distance now going to be multiple lanes where there are no speed breakers that means no control for speed limit and carrying capacity of the public vehicles. Most of the drivers in mangalore / udupi are unexpeienced youngsters, going on an unlimited speed limit / carrying capacity which leads to minor / major accidents causing disability / death of innocent person. Who is responsible for this? Atleast the police commsioner's of both districts chalk out some plan to educate our coastal drivers in minimising the accidents.

I don’t know why few readers are in favour of these types of reckless drivers and commenting in favour of them if concerned department will take stringent action (heavy penalty & cancel of license) against the guilty/reckless/ drunken drivers then only the lesson for other drivers so we can save many peoples’ lives. ppl are forgetting the point, its neither the boy's fault nor the driver.....because, if u r new to this section of the road in mlore, u can notice that there is no service road for the fly over....i have escaped several times being run over by large vehicles while travelling near any flyovers ( surathkal, Kulur, kottara) ...none of the flyovers in mlore have service road....so it may be my photo in the news tomo, because NHAI has not yet provided any service roads for the flyovers in mlore....

May his soul rest in peace and GOD give his family courage and strength to the irreparable loss. I request with the RTO Authorities & Traffic Police & concerned department to take stringent action against guilty drivers, reckless drivers & alcoholic drivers (during driving) penalty around Rs.10000 if anybody losses the life because of reckless driving penalty should be charged Rs. 50000 to 100000 and paid to bereaved family & should cancel the drivers' license. If the peoples representatives (Elected and Non Elected Politicians, MP's, MLA's & MLC's) can not take up the issues with authorities in Mangalore and Udupi, can we expect them to take up our issues in Vidhana Soudha (Bangalore) and Parliment (N Delhi).
