Missouri, Oct 21: A Texas couple has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old high school student on a freeway in Missouri while she was driving to a Halloween event at the St Louis Zoo.
Willie Herndon, 42, has been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Alyssa Wilson. His wife, Taiya Herndon, has been charged with hindering prosecution for allegedly driving him to a hotel in Illinois following the shooting, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 7 pm last Wednesday on Interstate 170 in Overland, northwest of St Louis. Wilson was travelling south in her red Buick Encore when she passed a white Buick Enclave stopped on the roadside. According to investigators, security footage captured the sound of a gunshot shortly afterwards, with a person seen exiting the stationary vehicle before returning to it and driving away.
The bullet pierced the rear of Wilson's vehicle. First responders found her suffering from a gunshot wound and rushed her to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St Louis, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities said the couple, who are from Arlington, Texas, had no known connection to the teenager.
Wilson's father, Robert Hickman, described his daughter as a young woman excited about her future. She was just 60 days away from turning 18 and had been looking forward to a family holiday at Disney World, where she hoped to see Princess Tiana, her favourite character from the animated film “The Princess and the Frog”.
Investigators traced the vehicle using security footage and automated licence plate readers. After monitoring the vehicle, authorities arrested the couple outside a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois, on Friday.
A court-authorised search reportedly uncovered a firearm and other supporting evidence. Investigators are also analysing a shell casing recovered from the freeway.
According to Jack Abell, chief deputy commander of the region's Major Case Squad, Herndon provided details about his involvement during an interview and shared information relating to other possible investigations. Authorities said those investigations remain ongoing.
The charges were filed in Missouri on Friday. Bail was set at USD 1 million for Willie Herndon and USD 500,000 for Taiya Herndon, with both amounts required to be paid in full. The couple were being held in Illinois pending extradition to Missouri.
Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, assisted in the investigation. FBI officials said the case was solved within 36 hours through cooperation among multiple agencies.
Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive, saying investigations into potentially related cases are continuing.
