Two dead in Mumbai scrap godown fire

Mumbai, Oct 21: Two people died and four others sustained burn injuries after a major fire broke out at a scrap godown in Sakinaka, Andheri (East), Mumbai, on Tuesday evening, October 20.

The fire erupted at a godown located in Abdul Rashid Compound on Khairani Road. The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) received a call about the incident at 6.18 pm and declared it a Level-II fire at 6.37 pm, indicating a significant emergency.

Fire brigade personnel, police, Adani Electricity staff, a 108 ambulance and municipal ward staff were mobilised to the spot to carry out firefighting and rescue operations. At least eight fire engines and other emergency vehicles were deployed to control the blaze.

The fire spread rapidly as the scrap material at the godown fuelled the flames, making firefighting operations challenging. A senior fire brigade officer said it was too early to determine the cause of the fire, given its scale and nature. Preliminary investigations have not yet established the origin of the blaze.

The injured were identified as Taufiq Shadil Qureshi (20), who suffered 80 per cent burns; Jahid Abidulla Qureshi (20) and Kamal Jalauddin Shah (47), who sustained 40 per cent burns each; and Lalchand Ramlakhan Gautam (40), who suffered 10 per cent burns. All four were admitted to the civic-run Rajawadi Hospital for treatment.

According to doctors, Qureshi is in critical condition, while the two patients with 40 per cent burns are in serious condition. All three have been admitted to the trauma ward. Gautam, who sustained 10 per cent burns, is stable and will remain under observation before being discharged.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been established. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, and further investigation is underway.
