Mangaluru, Oct 6: St Theresa’s School, Bendur, celebrated Gandhi Jayanti and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti with great enthusiasm and reverence. The programme was attended by the principal, Sr Lourdes, vice principal, Sr Vidya, teachers and NCC cadets.

The celebration also marked the International Day of Non-violence, observed in honour of Mahatma Gandhi. The NCC cadets presented a special programme highlighting Gandhiji’s message of truth, non-violence, peace and harmony. They reflected on how his ideals continue to inspire us to live with mutual respect, understanding, compassion and a spirit of peaceful coexistence.

The programme also recalled the life and contribution of Lal Bahadur Shastri, whose simplicity, humility, patriotism and dedication to the nation continue to inspire generations. His famous call, 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan', highlighted the vital contribution of soldiers and farmers to the nation. His life reminded the students that true leadership is expressed through simplicity, integrity, responsibility and service.

In her message, the principal, Sr Lourdes, spoke about the enduring contributions of both national leaders. She highlighted Gandhiji’s vision of a life rooted in truth, non-violence and harmony, and Shastri Ji’s example of simplicity, self-discipline, patriotism and service to the nation. She reminded the students that the values of these great leaders should not remain merely as historical ideals but should be reflected in their daily lives, relationships and actions. She appreciated the NCC cadets for their active participation and for carrying the message of social responsibility beyond the school campus.

As part of the celebration, the NCC cadets took a pledge to uphold cleanliness and contribute towards a clean and healthy society. Following the programme, they actively participated in a Swachh Bharat cleanliness drive, cleaning the surroundings of the school. They also visited nearby shops and created awareness among shopkeepers and the public about cleanliness, proper waste disposal and the importance of keeping the surroundings clean.

The programme helped the cadets understand that the legacy of Gandhiji and Lal Bahadur Shastri extends beyond their historical contributions. Their lives continue to inspire us to uphold truth, non-violence, simplicity, discipline, patriotism, harmony and service, and to take responsibility for building a better society.
