Mangaluru, Sep 22: A Mangaluru student studying at Shaheen Institution in Bidar is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mangaluru and is in a coma after reportedly falling seriously ill at the institution’s hostel, her parents said.

The parents have alleged that negligence on the part of the institution led to the deterioration of their daughter Yumna’s health and have demanded a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

Speaking at a press conference at the Mangaluru Press Club on Tuesday, the student’s father, Ashwaq Sheikh, alleged that Yumna had developed severe illness and stomach pain while staying at the hostel. She was treated at the hostel’s nursing unit, but her condition worsened and she was not provided timely medical attention or shifted to a hospital, he alleged.

After the family was informed about her condition, she was brought to a private hospital in Mangaluru, where she was diagnosed with typhoid fever. The doctors later informed the family that her kidneys, brain and other organs were not functioning properly, which the father attributed to the delay in receiving appropriate treatment.

The family has already spent around Rs 35 lakh on her treatment, Ashwaq Sheikh said, adding that the institution had not responded adequately after the student was brought back to Mangaluru.

He demanded that the institution provide complete details of the treatment given to the student at the Bidar hostel, along with medical records and CCTV footage. He also urged authorities to conduct a detailed investigation and take appropriate action against those responsible based on the findings and applicable laws.

He further claimed that several other students at the hostel had suffered from illnesses including jaundice and typhoid, and urged the authorities to conduct health examinations of the students.
