Mumbai, Sep 5: Dahi Handi celebrations held across Mumbai, Thane, Pune and other cities turned tragic on Saturday after a seven-year-old boy died in Malad while participating in the festivities.

The incident occurred around 3 pm on September 5. According to the information available, a side column reportedly collapsed while the Dahi Handi was being broken, hitting the child on the head. He suffered severe head injuries and died in the incident.

The tragedy cast a shadow over the celebrations in Mumbai, where Govindas had gathered in large numbers to mark Gopalkala. Citizens urged participants and organisers to exercise caution and ensure adequate safety measures during the festivities.

At least 32 Govindas were also reported injured during Dahi Handi celebrations in Mumbai.

According to available information, 29 injured Govindas were admitted to City Hospital. Of them, 25 were treated and discharged, while four remain under treatment and are said to be in stable condition.

Two other Govindas are undergoing treatment at ES Hospital, while another injured participant was admitted to WS Hospital. He received primary treatment and was discharged.

The figures are based on information available until noon on September 5, and the number of injured participants could increase by the night as celebrations continue.

Meanwhile, the Dahi Handi festivities also turned tragic in Pimpri-Chinchwad, where a 45-year-old woman, Salma Pathan, died after being struck by a piece of an iron structure.

According to the information available, the incident occurred while workers were removing decorations after the Dahi Handi celebrations. A piece of the iron structure reportedly fell on Pathan’s head, leaving her seriously injured.

She was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

Her death has left residents of the area mourning, with calls for greater caution and safety during the installation and dismantling of Dahi Handi structures.
