Mangaluru, Sep 3: The Women’s Forum- ‘Abhaya’ of St Agnes PU College, Mangaluru, organised a meaningful hair donation drive on September 2. The initiative aimed at extending support to cancer warriors by donating hair for the making of wigs and creating awareness on cancer among students.
The programme was addressed by the speaker Dr Elroy Saldanha, consultant surgical oncologist and robotic surgeon at Father Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangaluru. Addressing the students, Dr Saldanha spoke about the global problem of cancer and highlighted on the importance of early detection and timely treatment.
He explained the common types of cancer affecting men and women and urged the students not to ignore early signs and symptoms. He emphasised the importance of regular basic health check-ups and various causes and risk factors associated with cancer. He also provided an overview of the available treatment options, stressing that early detection and appropriate treatment can significantly improve outcomes.
The highlight of the programme was the generous gesture of eleven hair donors of the college and campus for the noble cause. Their selfless act was a touching expression of compassion and solidarity with cancer patients.
Preethi D’Souza, make-up artist and owner of Priwinkle, volunteered her services for the cause and assisted in cutting the hair of the donors. Her contribution added great value to the initiative.
The entire programme was coordinated by Dr Tressie Menezes, whose dedicated efforts ensured the smooth and meaningful conduct of the event.
The hair donation drive was more than just an act of giving; it was a powerful message of hope, empathy and kindness. The initiative encouraged students to become more aware of their health and to extend compassion and support to those battling cancer. It reflected the commitment of St Agnes PU College towards nurturing socially responsible and compassionate young citizens.
The occasion was graced by Sr Norine D’Souza, principal, and Sr Janet Sequeira, vice principal, Abhaya committee, staff and students whose presence and encouragement added significance to the programme.
