Mangaluru: MCC raids street food stalls, seizes Ajinomoto, penalises vendors

Mangaluru, Jul 24: In the interest of food safety and public health, a team of health officials from the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) conducted inspections at street food stalls near the Bejai KSRTC bus stand and seized Ajinomoto, which is considered harmful to health.

During the inspection, it was found that some food stalls were illicitly using Ajinomoto in their preparations, which the officials subsequently confiscated. Furthermore, the health officials imposed a fine of Rs 6,000 on three street food stalls near State Bank in Mangaluru for using banned artificial colours in their food items.

On this occasion, the officials instructed all food vendors to strictly adhere to food hygiene and safety regulations.

A stern warning was issued that legal action would be initiated under the Food Safety Act against those who violate the rules and use harmful substances in food preparation.

    Footpath near KSRTC Bejai was supposed to have cleared of street vendors yesterday by MCC officials. The food stalls were not cleared or have they sprung back to action today? Why they were not cleared again?

    Not sure the hue and cry is justified. MSG is widely used in Chinese and malay food in all of south east Asia. It gives that distinct umami taste which is now scientifically believed to be another naturally occurring taste in humans.

    They'll only raid unregulated street vendors. Never the big restaurants or chains of restaurants. Because street vendors cannot pay them. Big restaurants pay them big money to quietly go away. All these regulators (mcc, fssi...) are like ... I don't even want to write the word.

    Please understand, monosodium glutamate (chemical name of Ajinomoto) is natirally available in tomatoes. Anything excess is bad for the body, tomatoes or ajinomoto. The oil, the excess salt etc. are more harmful than ajinomoto. Also, everybody wants tasty food at a cheap price.

    If MSG ajinomoto is harmful for the health, then ban the sale of ajinomoto. What is the point of selling it then confiscating from the street vendor.? Ajinomoto is used in Japan for more than hundred years and it is not harmful for health. There is no scientific evidence that proves that ajinomoto is harmful for health. We just need to educate ourself.

    Dear readers/Mangaloreans I am a Mangalorean and i have seen these street vendors at Bejai-KSRTC(Kaoor cross)since last 25-30years.some questions that come to my mind which may never be answered are: 1.Who has permitted these street vendors to run their shop on the footpath 2.There is a women's welfare and empowerment department sponsored/supported stall too which dishes out this unhygienic food too - is this permitted 3.This is also a snack counter for the migrant workers who come out of the wine stores on both sides of the road - is the police department aware 4.Isnt it a rule that fssai and health department/ corporation license is to be displayed in all eateries.- is it available 5.These vendors occupy the footpath and the main road and block the road during peak hours- was the concrete road constructed for these vendors from tax payers money.6.Food color especially red color is banned by law- why no action.is taken till date. The raid that has taken place is a momentary action for some other non compliance and business will continue as usual tomorrow. .As co.mented above these are scattered raids and will not happen in places where unwritten compliances are met.

    Ajinomoto is just the brand name for MSG - Monosodium Glutamate. In India and most of Asia, when people say "Ajinomoto", they mean that white crystalline powder you see in Chinese restaurant kitchens. The company Ajinomoto Co., Inc. is a Japanese company that first made it in 1909. What is it really? Chemically: Sodium salt of glutamic acid - an amino acid that occurs naturally in tomatoes, cheese, mushrooms, meat, soy sauce. Taste: It gives umami - the 5th basic taste after sweet, salty, sour, bitter. Umami is that savory, meaty, mouth-filling taste. It has no smell of its own, but it makes other flavors pop. Why is it used? 1. Flavor enhancer It doesn't have a strong taste itself, but it makes your food taste more like itself. A little pinch makes soup taste deeper, fried rice more savory, chicken curry more meaty. 2. To reduce salt MSG has about 1/3 the sodium of table salt. Chefs use a little MSG + less salt to keep food tasty but lower sodium. ...Tak...Takk...

    Is Ajinomoto banned in India? No, Ajinomoto (MSG) is NOT banned in India. This is a very common rumor. The truth is: FSSAI - the food authority of India - allows it, but with rules. What FSSAI says: Not banned: Monosodium Glutamate (INS 621) is permitted as a flavor enhancer under the Food Safety and Standards Regulations. Where it CAN be used: It can be added to many processed foods, restaurant foods, Chinese / Indo-Chinese dishes, instant noodles, soups, chips, spice mixes, etc. - but within permitted limits and it must be declared on the label. Where it CANNOT be used: Not allowed in foods for infants below 12 months of age. Not allowed to be added to certain listed foods like pasteurized milk, ghee, butter, milk powder, edible oils, flour, plain spices, etc. where flavor enhancers are not permitted. Labeling compulsory: If a packaged food contains MSG, it must be mentioned in the ingredients list as "Monosodium Glutamate" or "Flavour Enhancer (INS 621)" / "Ajinomoto". Why people think it is banned? In 2015-16, during the Maggi noodles controversy, the product was under scrutiny for lead and for not declaring MSG. Many news channels reported it wrongly as "Ajinomoto banned". Some states and many schools / hostels have banned it on their own premises as a precaution, but that's a local decision, not a national ban....Tak...Takk....

    Good job that ajinomoto was noticed in the street vendors cart ! One question though! Why does MCC/ food inspector raid only in places like ladyhill, mannagudda, bejai why not go to valencia near father mullers ( the down road towards falnir) the road gets blocked because of the street food vendors there as well no news of any falnir/valencia street food vendors being raided !
