Miami, Jul 19: England secured the bronze medal at the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a thrilling 6-4 victory over France in a record-breaking third-place play-off that produced 10 goals and several individual milestones.
Often regarded as the least significant fixture of the tournament, the bronze-medal match instead turned into one of the most entertaining contests of the World Cup, with relentless attacking football and dramatic swings in momentum.
Thomas Tuchel's side raced into a commanding 4-0 lead before half-time. Declan Rice opened the scoring with a long-range effort, Ezri Konsa doubled the advantage from a set-piece, and Bukayo Saka struck twice to leave France reeling at the interval.

England's pace on the counter repeatedly exposed France's high defensive line, with Marcus Rashford, Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze creating constant problems for Didier Deschamps' side.
France mounted a spirited comeback after the break, led by captain Kylian Mbappe. He scored twice to revive his team's hopes, while Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembele also found the net as Les Bleus threatened a remarkable recovery.
However, England responded each time. Saka completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot before Jude Bellingham sealed the victory with England's sixth goal.
Despite the defeat, Mbappe created history by taking his tournament tally to 10 goals, strengthening his lead in the race for the Golden Boot. The Real Madrid forward also surpassed Lionel Messi to become the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history with 22 World Cup goals.
France's Michael Olise also enjoyed a landmark performance despite ending on the losing side. His two assists took his total to seven for the tournament, the highest number of assists ever recorded by a player in a single FIFA World Cup.
Saka, who had struggled for consistency earlier in the tournament because of injuries and rotation, produced one of England's standout displays, scoring the first World Cup hat-trick of his career and playing a decisive role in the victory.
The result provided England with a positive finish after their semi-final defeat to Argentina and handed Tuchel's side valuable momentum heading into the next international cycle.
The third-place play-off ultimately became the highest-scoring match of the tournament, delivering multiple World Cup records and one of the most memorable bronze-medal clashes in the competition's history.
