New Delhi, Jul 16: Delhi's iconic Red Fort has been closed to the public from July 15 to August 15 to facilitate preparations and security arrangements for India's 80th Independence Day celebrations, according to an order issued by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
The closure has been enforced under Rule 5 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Rules, 1959, allowing authorities to undertake extensive preparations for the annual event, during which the Prime Minister addresses the nation from the historic monument's ramparts.

A senior ASI official said the closure is a routine measure implemented every year ahead of Independence Day to enable security agencies to take control of the premises and complete necessary arrangements.
During the month-long closure, officials will carry out barricading, stage construction, installation of technical equipment, and a comprehensive security audit to ensure the safety of the Prime Minister, dignitaries and attendees.
The entire Red Fort complex has been handed over to security agencies, and entry has been prohibited for both domestic and international tourists until the conclusion of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15.
The 30-day closure follows a pattern adopted in recent years. The monument was similarly closed for 30 days in 2025 and has observed extended shutdowns since 2022. Earlier, the closure period was shorter, including 26 days in 2021 and only eight days in 2018.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Red Fort has hosted India's Independence Day celebrations every year since August 15, 1947. On Independence Day, access to the monument is restricted exclusively to holders of government-issued passes under stringent security arrangements.
