New York, Jun 18: An 18-year-old Indian tourist died after falling from a horse-drawn carriage in New York’s Central Park when the horse suddenly bolted, triggering a tragic accident that has reignited debate over the safety of the park’s historic carriage industry.

The victim, identified as Romanch Mahajan, was visiting New York with his family on their first trip to the United States. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon while he was riding in a carriage along with three family members.

According to reports, the horse unexpectedly ran out of control after the carriage driver reportedly dismounted to take photographs of the passengers. As the horse sped through the park, two occupants were thrown from the moving carriage.

Videos circulating on social media showed the horse racing through Central Park before the carriage overturned after colliding with another carriage on a busy section of the park.

Romanch sustained critical head injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The other occupants reportedly declined medical treatment.

Media reports said the teenager was injured while attempting to save his mother, who had lost her grip and was falling from the carriage. His father stated that Romanch jumped in an effort to help her before suffering the fatal injury.

The incident has prompted calls for a comprehensive investigation. Labour union representatives said the horse involved had been operating in the park for only six weeks and stressed the need to examine safety protocols governing horse-drawn carriage operations.

The tragedy has also intensified scrutiny of Central Park's horse-drawn carriage industry, a tourist attraction that has operated for more than 150 years. Animal welfare groups and safety advocates have long campaigned for its closure, citing risks to both horses and the public.

The latest accident comes just days after another horse reportedly collapsed and died in the park, further fuelling concerns over the future of the industry.

Central Park, one of New York City's most visited landmarks, attracts millions of visitors annually and remains a major tourist destination. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
