Fatty liver reversible if detected early, say experts

New Delhi, Jun 8: Fatty liver disease, once considered a minor health concern, is rapidly emerging as one of the most common liver disorders in India, driven by rising obesity, diabetes, unhealthy diets, sedentary lifestyles and poor sleep habits. Medical experts warn that while the condition often develops silently, early intervention can help reverse liver damage and prevent serious complications.

Doctors say fatty liver disease occurs when excess fat accumulates in liver cells, affecting the organ’s ability to perform vital functions such as processing nutrients, filtering toxins and regulating metabolism.

According to studies published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology, nearly one in three urban Indians may be affected by some form of fatty liver disease. Most cases are detected incidentally during routine health check-ups, blood tests or ultrasound scans, as the condition often produces no obvious symptoms in its early stages.

Dr Shaleen Agarwal, Head of Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery at Amrita Hospital Faridabad, said the liver has a remarkable capacity to heal itself when harmful factors are addressed in time.

He noted that weight loss remains one of the most effective ways to reverse early-stage fatty liver disease. Research indicates that losing around 5 per cent of body weight can significantly reduce liver fat, while a weight reduction of 7 to 10 per cent may help decrease liver inflammation and even reverse early fibrosis, or liver scarring.

For an individual weighing 80 kilograms, losing approximately four to eight kilograms could lead to measurable improvements in liver health, experts say. However, doctors caution against rapid weight-loss methods, stressing that gradual and sustainable lifestyle changes yield the best results.

Dr Agarwal warned that fatty liver disease should not be dismissed as a harmless finding on an ultrasound report. If left untreated, simple fatty liver can progress to more serious conditions, including steatohepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver failure and even liver cancer.

He said many patients seek medical attention only after symptoms such as fatigue, swelling, jaundice or abdominal discomfort appear, by which stage significant liver damage may already have occurred.

Experts also advise against relying on crash diets, detox programmes or miracle supplements that claim to cure fatty liver disease quickly. Such approaches can sometimes place additional stress on the liver and lead to nutritional deficiencies.

Instead, specialists recommend a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins, along with regular exercise, proper diabetes management, adequate sleep, avoidance of excessive alcohol consumption and long-term weight control.

Medical professionals emphasise that fatty liver disease offers a valuable window of opportunity for reversal if detected early. Consistent lifestyle improvements, even modest ones, can significantly improve liver function and prevent irreversible damage.

Experts say the condition may be silent, but it should never be ignored, particularly among individuals with obesity, diabetes or sedentary lifestyles. Early diagnosis and sustained lifestyle changes remain the key to protecting long-term liver health.
