Mumbai, Jun 7: Filmmaker Subhash Ghai has sparked excitement among film fans after hinting at the possibility of a sequel to his 1999 romantic musical hit Taal, starring Aishwarya Rai and Akshaye Khanna.

In a recent social media post, Ghai asked followers whether they would be interested in a new version of Taal 2, potentially featuring a fresh cast and a younger director, while he considers stepping in as producer.

The original film, which also featured Anil Kapoor, Amrish Puri, and Alok Nath in key roles, remains one of Bollywood’s most celebrated musical romances, widely remembered for its storytelling and soundtrack composed by A. R. Rahman.

Alongside the sequel discussion, Ghai also revisited a memorable moment from the film’s international reception. He recalled that during a 2005 screening at an event in Chicago, renowned film critic Roger Ebert praised Taal for its “pure entertainment” and “innocence.”

According to Ghai, Ebert was especially impressed by Aishwarya Rai’s performance, as well as the film’s music and choreography, noting that it carried the charm of a classic Hollywood-style musical that had largely faded from contemporary American cinema.

Sharing the memory on Instagram, Ghai wrote that he felt honoured by the recognition and highlighted it as one of the most significant compliments the film ever received.

Turning to the present, the filmmaker directly engaged fans online, asking whether they would support a modern reimagining of Taal with new talent and a contemporary creative team.
