Panaji, Jun 5: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has directed authorities to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the death of an undergraduate student who was found dead just hours after an FIR was registered against him in connection with an alleged garbage dumping incident in Mapusa.

Speaking to reporters, Sawant said all circumstances surrounding the case would be thoroughly examined. Responding to questions about whether filing an FIR was warranted for what has been described as a roadside waste disposal offence, the Chief Minister maintained that the ongoing inquiry would determine the facts and accountability, if any.

The student was discovered dead on Friday shortly after the Mapusa Police registered a case against him over allegations of dumping garbage along a road in the Gaunswaddo area of Mapusa.

The incident had drawn significant public attention after a video circulated widely on social media. The footage allegedly showed local residents confronting the student over the purported dumping of waste, sparking intense online debate and criticism.

According to police officials, the death is being treated as a suspected suicide at this stage. However, investigators have stressed that the exact cause of death can only be confirmed after the post-mortem examination and completion of the investigation.

The case has generated widespread discussion, with questions being raised about the events leading up to the student's death, the handling of the complaint, and the impact of public scrutiny following the viral video. Authorities have said the inquiry will examine all relevant aspects before any conclusions are drawn.
