Ram Charan shines in Peddi, but weak screenplay limits the film's impact

Mumbai, Jun 4: Ram Charan’s much-awaited film Peddi released in theatres on Thursday, bringing to the screen a story centred on identity, dignity and recognition. Directed by Buchi Babu Sana, the film is set in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, and follows the journey of Peddi, a gifted athlete who excels in cricket, wrestling and running.

The story presents Peddi as an exceptional sportsman whose achievements earn him admiration across the region. However, the film goes beyond sports, focusing on his struggle to secure recognition and identity for his village and its people.

Ram Charan delivers a commanding performance in the title role and emerges as the film’s strongest asset. The actor convincingly portrays Peddi’s determination, anger, vulnerability and triumph, carrying the narrative with his screen presence and dedication. His physical transformation and energetic dance sequences further add to the film’s appeal.

Despite Charan’s impressive performance, Peddi is weighed down by a weak screenplay and inconsistent execution. With a runtime exceeding three hours, the film often feels stretched, with several sequences appearing unnecessarily prolonged. The narrative lacks cohesion, and important developments fail to create the intended emotional impact.

Janhvi Kapoor, who plays Achiyyamma, has limited scope in the film, with her character receiving little development. The supporting cast, including Divyenndu, Shiva Rajkumar, Jagapathi Babu, Boman Irani and Ravi Kishan, also appear underutilised due to the film’s uneven writing.

Meanwhile, ahead of the film’s release, Janhvi Kapoor visited the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple to seek blessings. The actress climbed the 3,550 steps of the Alipiri footpath barefoot, following temple traditions.

Videos and photographs of her pilgrimage quickly gained attention on social media. Dressed in a pink kurti and palazzo during the climb, Janhvi later offered prayers at the temple wearing a traditional purple silk saree complemented by traditional jewellery.

Speaking at a recent promotional event, Janhvi described Peddi as a story about a man’s fight for identity and finding purpose in life. She also praised Ram Charan, director Buchi Babu Sana and music composer A.R. Rahman for their contributions to the project.

Produced by Mythri Movie Makers and Vriddhi Cinemas, Peddi stars Ram Charan in the lead role alongside Janhvi Kapoor, Shiva Rajkumar, Divyenndu and Jagapathi Babu. The film released in theatres worldwide on June 4.
