Patna, May 29: In a shocking incident from Bihar’s Jamui district, a government school teacher narrowly escaped death after armed assailants allegedly opened fire at him on a roadside. Remarkably, the first bullet aimed at his head was stopped by the helmet he was wearing, saving his life.

The attack took place near Matiya village under the Lakshmipur police station area. The injured teacher, Gautam Kumar Das, belongs to a politically influential family and is the son of former village Mukhiya Mahesh Ravidas. His mother, Mohini Devi, currently serves as the Mukhiya of the village.

According to officials, Das is employed as a teacher at a government school in Kajra Panchayat of Lakhisarai district.

On Friday morning, he was travelling on his motorcycle to Malaypur railway station to board a train for school when three masked men on another bike allegedly began trailing him near Bishanpur.

The attackers reportedly overtook his motorcycle and forced him to stop. Moments later, one of the assailants allegedly placed a firearm against his head and pulled the trigger.

Describing the terrifying experience, Das said the bullet struck his helmet instead of his head, causing the helmet to fall off. The attackers then fired a second shot, which hit him near his right shoulder.

“The criminals were following me. They overtook me and forced my bike to stop. As soon as I stopped, they fired at my head. Thankfully, the helmet absorbed the impact. The second bullet struck my shoulder. Somehow, I managed to pick up the helmet, wear it again, and run towards the village to save myself,” he recounted.

After the shooting, the accused fled from the spot.

Police personnel from the nearby Barhat police station, who were on patrol in the area, quickly reached the scene. Sub-Inspector Manoj Kumar immediately shifted the injured teacher to a hospital.

Following preliminary treatment at a private clinic in Jamui, doctors referred him to Patna for advanced medical care due to the seriousness of his injuries.

The incident has triggered fear and tension in the region, especially because the victim’s family holds local political influence.
The teacher’s mother claimed that the family had received threats from an individual just days before the attack, raising suspicions about a possible targeted conspiracy.

Police are currently probing multiple angles, including political rivalry, personal enmity, and other possible motives behind the shooting.

Jamui SDPO Satish Suman confirmed that police received information about a firing incident involving three motorcycle-borne criminals near Bishanpur High School on Friday morning.

He stated that teams from the Barhat and Laxmipur police stations, under his supervision, have carried out a detailed investigation of the crime scene and nearby areas. CCTV footage from surrounding locations is being analysed, while forensic experts have also collected evidence from the site.

Police have launched raids to identify and arrest the accused. Officials believe the exact motive behind the attack will become clearer as the investigation progresses further.
