Gangtok, May 27: Sikkim has officially achieved the status of a fully literate state under the Centre’s Ullas – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, accomplishing the milestone ahead of the national target year of 2027, officials announced on Wednesday.

The achievement was formally recognised during the seventh convocation ceremony of Sikkim University in Gangtok, attended by President Droupadi Murmu.

Also present at the event were Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and state Education Minister Raju Basnet.

The Ullas – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram is a nationwide initiative focused on adult education, foundational literacy, and lifelong learning, aimed at expanding inclusive access to education across all sections of society.

Addressing the gathering, President Murmu congratulated the people and government of Sikkim for the landmark accomplishment.

“Sikkim becoming a fully literate state is a proud moment. I congratulate Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, his government, and every resident of the state for this remarkable achievement,” she said.

The President also highlighted the strong participation of women in literacy campaigns, noting that the involvement of mothers and women learners reflected the inclusive spirit of the programme.

“Through collective efforts and active participation, the state has achieved full literacy. This success belongs to every citizen of Sikkim,” Murmu added.

Governor Om Prakash Mathur described the achievement as a historic and proud milestone for the Himalayan state and praised the administration for successfully implementing literacy initiatives across urban and rural areas.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba credited the achievement to years of dedication by volunteers, teachers, grassroots workers, and local communities.

He stressed the importance of sustaining literacy standards and continuing educational outreach efforts in the future.

Officials stated that the milestone was made possible through coordinated participation from Gram Panchayats, urban local bodies, educators, and community organisations working together to expand literacy access across the state.

The government also described the accomplishment as an important step toward social empowerment, dignity, and inclusive development, contributing to the broader national vision of “Viksit Bharat 2047.”
