Chandigarh, May 26: One person was killed and six others were injured after multiple LPG cylinders exploded inside a house in Chandigarh’s Burail area on Monday evening, triggering panic in the neighbourhood.

The powerful back-to-back explosions forced residents out of their homes as police and fire department teams rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations.

According to officials, the injured were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the area was cordoned off to prevent further risk.3

The house where the explosion occurred suffered extensive damage. Residents of nearby houses also reported cracks in walls due to the intensity of the blasts.

Eyewitnesses said they heard multiple loud explosions one after another, followed by chaos in the densely populated residential area.

Police said at least 10 LPG cylinders were recovered from the site. However, the exact cause of the explosions has not yet been confirmed.

Local residents alleged that illegal LPG cylinder refilling was being carried out inside the house where the incident took place.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Gurjeet Kaur confirmed that an FIR has been registered and that allegations of illegal refilling and black marketing are being investigated.

Several locals claimed that illegal storage and refilling of LPG cylinders had become common in the Burail area, posing serious safety risks in the densely packed residential lanes.

Residents also said narrow lanes in the area often make it difficult for emergency vehicles to access the site during crises, worsening the impact of such incidents.

Police said investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the explosions.
