Mecca, May 25: More than 1.5 million pilgrims have arrived in the holy city of Mecca for the annual Haj pilgrimage, with Saudi authorities implementing heightened security measures amid ongoing tensions in West Asia.
Pilgrims dressed in traditional white garments made their way to the vast Mina camp after completing the “tawaf” ritual — circling the Kaaba seven times at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Thousands travelled on foot and by bus as one of the world’s largest religious gatherings officially commenced.

This year’s Haj is taking place against the backdrop of continued regional uncertainty and hopes for a possible easing of tensions involving Iran and the United States. Reports of ongoing diplomatic discussions regarding a ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz have added to the geopolitical significance surrounding the pilgrimage season.
Saudi Arabia has significantly strengthened security arrangements to ensure the safety of pilgrims. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that advanced air defence systems have been deployed around Mecca and the holy sites to guard against potential aerial threats.
In an official statement, Saudi authorities said the air defence forces are responsible for protecting the skies over the pilgrimage areas and ensuring the security and peace of millions of worshippers visiting the kingdom.
The heightened vigilance comes after recent regional security incidents, including drone-related threats in Gulf countries. Saudi officials recently stated that three drones entering the kingdom’s airspace from Iraq were intercepted, while the United Arab Emirates also reported detecting multiple drones over the past few days.
Despite regional tensions, Saudi authorities said international participation in this year’s Haj has remained strong, with more foreign pilgrims arriving compared to last year.
The annual pilgrimage draws Muslims from across the world, including pilgrims from Iran and other countries in the region, underscoring the religious significance and global scale of the Haj.
