Parbhani, May 17: Residents of Parbhani observed ‘No Vehicle Day’ on Sunday in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for austerity and fuel conservation amid the ongoing West Asia crisis, the district administration said.

In view of the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, Prime Minister Modi had recently urged citizens to reduce petrol and diesel consumption, use metro rail services, opt for carpooling, increase the use of electric vehicles, utilise railway services for parcel transport and adopt work-from-home practices wherever possible.

According to an official release issued by the district administration, citizens voluntarily kept motorised vehicles off the roads and instead preferred bicycles, walking and public transport for commuting across the city.

The administration said the impact of the initiative was visible from morning onwards, with a noticeable decline in vehicular traffic across several parts of the city.

District guardian minister Meghna Sakore-Bordikar praised the response from residents and termed the public participation inspiring.

“The social commitment shown by the citizens is highly commendable. I urge everyone to show similar enthusiasm for the ‘No Vehicle Day’ next Sunday as well,” she said.

The initiative was organised as part of the Centre’s broader appeal for responsible resource usage and conservation during the ongoing global economic and energy uncertainties.
