Mangaluru, May 14: The pre-monsoon showers have gained momentum in Dakshina Kannada district, with various parts experiencing good rainfall on Wednesday, May 13. Following the changing weather patterns, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the coastal region for the next two days.

Thunderstorms accompanied by rain lashed several parts of Beltangady taluk, including Venur, Kashipatna, Mundaje, Kalmanja, and Ujire. Parts of Sullia and Puttur taluks also witnessed rainfall after May 13 evening.

Meanwhile, Mangaluru recorded a maximum temperature of 34.8°C, which is 0.9°C higher than normal, and a minimum temperature of 22.5°C, marking a dip of 2.6°C below the normal average.

It may be recalled that Mangaluru experienced heavy downpours accompanied by thunder and lightning on the night of May 12, leading to artificial flooding in several low-lying areas.

On Wednesday morning, civic authorities undertook the cleaning of major storm water drains (Raja Kaluves) and smaller streams to facilitate smooth water flow. Operations to clear uprooted trees were also carried out in various locations. The heavy winds on Tuesday night had brought down several electric poles, causing widespread overnight power outages across the city.

According to the latest IMD forecast, the coastal region is highly likely to experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder, lightning, and gusty winds over the next two days. In light of this, an orange alert has been declared for Thursday, May 14, and Friday, May 15. Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious during this period due to the possibility of high wind speeds and intense showers.
