Udupi, May 12: A scholarship distribution programme organized by the Malabar Gold & Diamonds charitable trust was successfully held on Tuesday at the Ajjarkad Town Hall in Udupi.

During the event, scholarships worth Rs 42 lac were distributed to 518 girl students from 75 government and aided colleges across the district. The initiative was conducted under the educational support activities of the trust to encourage deserving students in pursuing higher education.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Gururaj Gantihole said, “I am happy when companies undertake CSR activities, especially those focused on women. Very few companies in Udupi actively engage in CSR, and Malabar dedicates five percent of its profit towards such initiatives. We, the people of Karavali, are fortunate, especially in the field of education. Our district and its environment support young minds. If the standard of education declines, the people of Udupi will raise their voices, that is the awareness among our citizens. Udupi is rich not only in education but also in the knowledge and awareness of its people. In my constituency, many students in hostels come from different districts, which is a matter of pride for Udupi. Supporting them is also our responsibility and pride. I congratulate the teachers, parents and Malabar for this CSR initiative.”

MP Kota Srinivas Poojary said, “I appreciate Malabar for this CSR project as they have contributed Rs 42 lac towards education. I read the CSR report which stated that more than Rs 250 cr has been distributed to the needy, which is commendable. Preetham, who comes from a middle-class family and secured first rank, was felicitated today. Earlier, there was a belief that only a doctor’s child could become a doctor, but today anyone can achieve such dreams because companies like Malabar are investing their profits in education.”

Former MP Jayaprakash Hegde said, “During my younger days, there were no colleges in Udupi and we had to travel to Mangaluru for higher education. Today, both districts compete in the field of education. Christian institutions have played an important role in the development of education in coastal Karnataka. Success can be challenging because society expects successful people to always remain successful. I encourage students, and we in Udupi will continue to support every child in the field of education. Today, students face competitive examinations like NEET and CET. I urge students to improve their communication skills because companies seek people who can express themselves well. Many scholars and company representatives have told me that Udupi students score high marks but often lack viva and communication skills. Learning should never stop, as it not only improves general knowledge but also enhances overall personality.”

M A Gafoor, chairman, KSCDA said, “This programme is aimed at women’s development. We invited women achievers to inspire students, and many leaders spoke about progress and development. While politicians often speak about politics and governance, these women spoke about growth and opportunities for students. Malabar Gold and Diamonds have undertaken this initiative not merely as a CSR activity but as a contribution towards educational development. Ours is a diverse country — Preetham studies in a Christian institution, this CSR support comes from a Muslim organization, and it is awarded to a Hindu student. This reflects the unity in which we live. We need more companies like Malabar that support education, because education can provide everything in life. I hope students make good use of this scholarship and become successful in life.”

Teacher, anchor and writer Alwyn Danty said, “Today, 518 girl students are receiving this scholarship. The intention behind this initiative by Malabar and the government to give women is to provide greater opportunities and facilities for girl children so that women can become independent. These scholarships are awarded to students who secured more than 90 percent marks, and I hope they inspire many others. No matter what ornaments you wear, your smile is the most important. I wish all the students good health, happiness and prosperity in life.”

During the programme the checks were distributed to the students by the dignitaries. Preetham G Poojary, 2026 SSLC topper was felicitated in the programme. Heleyara Balagara Peradur, youngster Kanlur, Karakiri Friends, St Francis Church Udyavar, Belaku Sports Club associations were felicitated for their service to the community. Dr Divya Prasana, Nita Shetty, Hemali Rao, Tanuja Maben, Vidya Saraswati shared their experience in various fields and motivated the students.

The event witnessed the presence of Kota Srinivas Poojary, MP Udupi-Chikamagluru; Gururaj Gantihole, MLA Byndoor; Alwyn Danthy, teacher, anchor, writer; Jayaprakash Hegde, former MP; M A Gafoor, chairman, KSCDA; Venkatesh Pai, journalist; Vijay Kumar D, Udupi branch head and others were present.
