Mangaluru/Bengaluru, May 12: Pre-monsoon activities are picking up pace in the coastal regions, with the Meteorological Department forecasting heavy rainfall starting Wednesday, May 13. A depression is likely to form in the Bay of Bengal near the Tamil Nadu coast around May 12, which will trigger the change in weather patterns.

Under the influence of this system, widespread heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is expected across coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and several parts of Tamil Nadu from May 13. Furthermore, the movement of the southwest monsoon winds over the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea is expected to intensify from May 15, paving the way for strong pre-monsoon showers along the coast.

Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kasargod districts are highly likely to witness moderate to heavy rainfall over the next four to five days. The weather department also noted that highly favorable conditions are forming, indicating that the southwest monsoon might arrive slightly earlier than usual this year in the coastal belt.

With gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 km/h predicted in certain areas, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning to fishermen and residents living along the coastline to exercise utmost caution.

Meanwhile, heavy rains lashed parts of Chikkamagaluru district, particularly around Kalasa and Koppa, as well as Haveri on May 11 evening, bringing much-needed respite from the heat in those regions.
