Mumbai: Konkani Tradition Comes Alive at ‘Vovyo Verse ani Vojem'

Mumbai, Mar 12: St Joseph's Konkani Welfare Association of Mira Road parish organized ‘Vovyo Verse ani Vojem Vorchem’ progamme at St Joseph parish grounds on Sunday March 11, in order to preserve and propagate Konkani Catholic culture and traditions.

The Association members came in a procession along with the traditional ‘Vojem’ (‘Kuvallo’, ‘Ghadai’, ‘Kanti’ with vegetables, ‘Gumta’, ‘Kombo’, ‘Naarl’, and ‘Dukor’), a scene which reminded of the original rose ceremony in Mangalore. A group of women recited the ‘Vovyos’ beautifully with the crowd.

“The sustenance of Konkani culture that was fostered by generations of Konkans will be sustained if the new generation nurtures it for posterity,” said Mira Road parish priest Fr Dominic Vas while blessing the Vovyo Verse programme.

Dr Vas highlighted that Vovyo Verse ani Vojem Vorchem, a beautiful Mangalorean culture, has to be nurtured and needs to be kept alive along with mother tongue Konkani. He urged people to make proper use of this free service to uplift the distinct Mangalorean tradition.

A large crowd gathered for the programme and was amazed to see old artifacts displayed and a colourful procession of Vojem.

Mangalorean traditional articles were exhibited such as ‘Kurponn’, ‘Mand’, ‘Kanne’, ‘Doy’, ‘Kundli’, ‘Modki’, ‘Sher’, ‘Bhati’, ‘Kail’, ‘Adallo’, ‘Kailato’, ‘Shinke’, ‘Chimny’, ‘Koiti’, and many more. Prasanna Niddoidi compered the programme.

Dear Fr. Dominic congrats. This move to celebrate is really to be appreciated. What a tradition. I was even more surprised with the "Mangalorean Dukor" carried by these Mangaloreans with happiness. Hope they have not slaughtered this "dukor" during this holy season of Lent. This is the best way to keep the Mangalorean tradition alive. Congrats to all the Konkani Association Members.

A tradition cannot be sold, but can be kept alive for future generations to appreciate and draw lessons of serenity, unity and charity. While congratulating the Konkani Association - St. Joseph Church Mira Road, I wish and pray that the unity among all the Konkani speaking people of Mira Road be preserved for the greater glory of God and for the health and happiness of this great dynamic and ever growing parish of the Archdiocese of Mumbai. Fr. RudyOCD

I thank all of you who have appreciated the event. Special thanks to Fr. Boniface for always encouraging us. Thank you Ken for clarifying about the 'Dukor'. Infact 'Dukor' we carried was made of fibre, hence no animal cruelty!!! I thank Rons Bantwal and Daiji for reporting this event.

While I certainly do not want to spoil the mood of the people and I do appreciate such a wonderful event, it would have been better, if it was avoided during the season of Lent.

Excellent job done by the organizers except for carrying the "dukor" in such a way is an animal cruelty. It may be a tradition, but when you think of humanity its an animal cruelty. When non christians observe this scene, for sure they will say its a torture and cruelty on the animal. Being Christians and educated human beings please avoid the animal cruelty.

There are still many tools that were using in olden days missing. The volume/ Weight measuring of rice , then the tools used for building of " mudo " , and samaddo used to store the specices etc. The new generation can see only during Mangalorian traditional day. I recall good olden days. Now a days we are hardly using these things in modern life.
