Iran: Mall fire near Tehran kills 8, injures 36; cause under probe

Tehran, May 6: At least eight people were killed and 36 others injured after a major fire broke out at a shopping centre near Iran’s capital, state television reported on Wednesday.

The blaze erupted on Tuesday at the Arghavan shopping centre in Andisheh town in Tehran province. The cause of the fire remains unknown, with authorities launching an investigation into the incident.

Television footage showed firefighters battling intense flames as thick black smoke billowed from the multi-storey building.

Officials said there was no indication that the incident was linked to the ongoing tensions in the region, where a fragile ceasefire between Iran and the United States has been in place for the past few weeks.
