Mangaluru, May 5: In a heartening display of community support, a long-standing but dilapidated cobbler shop near St Agnes College has been transformed into a sturdy, waterproof metal structure, offering renewed hope and security to its owner, Ambika.

The newly constructed shop at the St Agnes College bus stop was inaugurated last week by MLA VedaVyas Kamath. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was carried out by Eric D’Souza and Prakash Pinto, marking the formal opening of the upgraded facility.

The shop, which has been serving the locality for nearly five decades, was originally set up by Ambika’s late husband. Over the years, the structure had fallen into disrepair due to continuous exposure to harsh monsoons. The old wooden setup had become unsafe, plagued by severe leakages and frequent rat infestations that damaged essential tools and materials.

Following her husband’s demise, Ambika, a homemaker with no prior experience in the trade, took charge of the shop to support her three daughters. Her eldest daughter is currently pursuing studies at St Agnes College. Despite challenges, Ambika learned the craft and continued the business to sustain her family.

Moved by her situation, Frederick Paul took the initiative to rebuild the shop with an initial contribution. He was joined by Eric D’Souza, member of Lions Club Valencia and advisory board member of Saanidhya Group of Institutions for Mentally Challenged Children. Additional support came from Prakash Pinto, D’Souza, and an anonymous donor, helping complete the project.

Constructed at a cost of Rs 45,000, the new metal shop is designed to be durable and weather-resistant, ensuring protection during heavy rains. Along with the structure, Ambika was also provided with new cobbler tools to replace those damaged over time.

Expressing her gratitude, Ambika said the new shop has brought her immense relief, as it secures her only source of livelihood. The improved working conditions are expected to ensure a steady income and a better future for her daughters.

The initiative has been widely appreciated as a shining example of compassion and collective effort. Well-wishers have been encouraged to support Ambika further by patronising her shop, reinforcing the impact of community-driven action in transforming lives.
