LPG price hike after five-state polls sparks political row, Ramesh Kanchan slams Centre

Udupi, May 2: Udupi Block Congress committee president Ramesh Kanchan has strongly criticized the central government over the recent hike in commercial LPG cylinder prices, alleging that the increase was deliberately delayed until the conclusion of elections in five states.

Ramesh Kanchan said that the sudden hike of Rs 993 in the price of commercial gas cylinders has come as a shock to the public. He demanded that BJP leaders clarify the reasons behind the steep increase.

Accusing the centre of mismanaging gas supply under the pretext of war, Ramesh Kanchan pointed out that prices had already been increased in recent months. “In March, the price was raised by Rs 114, followed by another hike of Rs 195 in April. Now, in May, the commercial LPG cylinder price has been increased again by Rs 993, setting what appears to be a new record in price hikes under Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he alleged.

Ramesh Kanchan further stated that the sharp increase in commercial LPG prices would severely impact hotel owners and small businesses, ultimately burdening common people. “This hike will force hotels and eateries to increase the prices of food and beverages, making daily life more expensive for ordinary citizens,” he said.

Ramesh Kanchan warned that the situation could worsen, leading to public protests against the government. Drawing a comparison with the past, He remarked that BJP leaders, including Shobha Karandlaje and Smriti Irani, who had earlier protested price hikes during Congress rule, are now maintaining silence.

Ramesh Kanchan also alleged that a hike in domestic LPG cylinder prices may follow soon. “People have understood these political dramas and will give a fitting response at the right time,” he added. He urged the government to immediately roll back the increased prices if it has any concern for public welfare.
