New Delhi, May 1: A 26-year-old Indian student from Andhra Pradesh has allegedly died by suicide in the United States, reportedly after struggling to secure employment following his post-graduation, sparking concern among the Indian diaspora and student community.

The deceased, identified as Iraganaboyina Chandu, hailed from Kurnool district and had recently completed his master’s degree in Chicago. According to family sources, he had been actively searching for a job for several weeks and was under severe emotional stress due to prolonged unemployment.

Chandu was said to be deeply distressed over his inability to find work and the financial burden it placed on his family back home, particularly his father, who works as a security guard.

Following the tragic incident, members of the Indian community in the US launched a fundraising campaign to support Chandu’s family. The initiative aims to raise USD 120,000, with an immediate requirement of USD 25,000 to cover the cost of transporting his mortal remains to India.

Organisers noted that the expenses include funeral home services, legal formalities, and international transportation, which the family cannot afford. The campaign has received an overwhelming response, collecting over USD 76,500 within just two days.

According to the latest update, all formal procedures have been completed and the body is currently kept at a funeral home. Efforts are underway to arrange transportation, with plans to airlift the remains to India by Sunday, subject to flight availability.

The issue has also drawn attention from authorities in India. A request for assistance was raised on social media to Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh, who expressed condolences and assured support.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu also responded, stating that efforts are being made to expedite the repatriation process and ensure a smooth transfer of the mortal remains.

The incident has once again highlighted the mounting pressures faced by Indian students abroad, particularly in navigating job uncertainties and financial challenges.

Authorities and community members continue to coordinate efforts to ensure Chandu’s remains are brought back home at the earliest, enabling his family to perform the final rites.
