Gangtok, Apr 28: In a unique blend of politics and symbolism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paused his campaign trail to play a friendly game of football with local youngsters in Gangtok on Tuesday, drawing widespread attention.
Dressed in track pants and football shoes instead of his usual attire, Modi appeared relaxed as he interacted with youth, with visuals of the moment quickly going viral.
The timing of the gesture has sparked political discussion, given its proximity to the ongoing election battle in West Bengal, where football holds deep cultural significance. Observers see the move as a symbolic outreach aimed at connecting with voters through a sport closely tied to regional identity.

The episode has drawn comparisons with Mamata Banerjee, who famously used a football during the 2021 Assembly elections to reinforce the slogan “Khela hobe,” which became a defining theme of her party’s campaign.
Sharing images on social media, Modi described the experience as “energising,” highlighting his engagement with young people during the visit.
The Prime Minister had arrived in Gangtok after concluding campaign events in West Bengal, where he called for “poriborton” (change) and criticised the ruling party over governance issues.
During his visit to Sikkim, Modi also participated in events marking 50 years of the state’s integration into the Indian Union. He unveiled development projects worth Rs 4,000 crore and interacted with Padma awardees and other dignitaries. A roadshow in Gangtok further underscored the political importance of the visit.
With the West Bengal election results scheduled for May 4 and the next phase of polling set for April 29, political observers are closely watching whether such symbolic gestures will influence voter sentiment.
The incident highlights how cultural cues and visual messaging continue to play a key role in shaping modern political campaigns.
