Mangaluru, Aug 15: Mount Carmel Central School, Maryhill, Mangaluru, commemorated the 80th Independence Day of India with patriotic fervour, pride and cultural elegance. The celebration, hosted by grades VIII A, B and XI, brought together the school family in a spirit of gratitude, remembrance and love for the nation.
The morning commenced at the school ground with the arrival of the chief guest, Col. Viraj Kamath, Group Commander, NCC Group, Mangaluru, accompanied by administrator Sr Carissima, principal Sr Melissa, superior Sr Reshma D’Souza, vice principal Sr Jovita, PTA vice president Sujay DSilva and PTA joint secretary Merrylin Pereira. Senior NCC Cadets Shivang D and Rachith Nayak escorted the dignitaries to the flag post.
The National Flag was hoisted by the chief guest, followed by the National Anthem, Jhanda Geet and national [ledge. The impressive march past, led by head boy Arush Ullal and head girl Aloma Lobo, accompanied by the NCC cadets, Scouts, Guides and class-wise contingents, reflected discipline, unity and patriotic pride.
The gathering then moved to the auditorium, where the cultural programme opened with a prayer seeking divine blessings, followed by a vibrant welcome dance that set a spirited tone for the celebration.
The welcome address by Kaitlyn and Jasmitha of grade VIII extended warm greetings to the chief guest and all the dignitaries, parents, teachers and students. The occasion was further dignified by the felicitation of chief guest Col. Viraj Kamath with a flower sapling by principal Sr Melissa, symbolising respect and gratitude.
The significance of the day presented by grade XI traced India’s journey from contemporary achievements back to the historic struggle for independence. The cultural presentation then highlighted the freedom fighters of Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu representing Amara Sulya Revolt of 1837, portraying the courage of Kedambadi Ramayya Gowda and Manjayya Baida. The Farmer Dance reflected resilience, the patriotic dance celebrated freedom and sacrifice, while the Tulu and Kodagu Dances showcased the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Chief guest Col. Viraj Kamath, the group commander of NCC Group, Mangaluru, addressing students and faculty, urged young citizens to embrace everyday patriotism and contribute actively to national growth.
Commending the students for their vibrant march past and cultural performances, he paid rich tributes to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices laid the foundation of modern India. Emphasizing the NCC motto of Unity and Discipline, he stressed that true service to the nation extends beyond wearing a uniform. "Every student can serve the nation through everyday acts, by studying sincerely, respecting elders, protecting the environment, and standing up for what is right," he stated. Reminding students that the future leaders, scientists, and soldiers of India are among them today, he called on the youth to carry forward the legacy of independence through hard work, integrity, and national pride.
Reflecting on the struggles of the past, principal Sr Melissa paid tribute to both renowned leaders and the countless unsung heroes who fought selflessly in towns, villages, and local districts to free the nation from British rule. Connecting the historical struggle to the modern era, Sr Melissa stated that building a "Vikshit Bharat" (Developed India) is not merely a vision on paper, but a shared responsibility resting in the hands of today's generation.
Emphasising character building, she urged students to choose honesty, responsibility, and compassion over indifference, respecting diversity regardless of caste, creed or language.
Concluding her address, principal Sr Melissa commended the students of Grades VIII A, B and XI, along with their mentors, for organizing the event, before wishing everyone present a joyous 80th Independence Day.
Alita DSouza of grade VI B was felicitated for her remarkable achievements in swimming at the CBSE zonal level and for getting selected for the Nationals. The chief guest and other dignitaries honoured her for her dedication and outstanding performance. The prize distribution ceremony honoured the winners of the various Independence Day competitions. The winners of the marchpast were felicitated by the chief guest for their disciplined and well-coordinated performance.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Anchal and Chris, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to making the celebration meaningful and memorable. The cultural programme was smoothly compered by Shreeya, Krunal, Aanya, Dhruv, Prisha and Rishon, while Angel and Ananjan anchored the flag-hoisting ceremony with confidence and poise.
The celebration concluded with a renewed reminder that freedom is not merely a legacy to cherish, but a responsibility to uphold through unity, integrity and service to the nation.
