Iranian oil tankers slip past US naval blockade, undermining maritime pressure strategy

Tehran, Apr 23: At least two fully loaded Iranian oil tankers have successfully navigated past a US-led naval blockade in recent days, highlighting the challenges facing Washington’s efforts to restrict Tehran’s crude exports.

The vessels, identified as Hero II and Hedy, were tracked moving out of the Persian Gulf and into the Arabian Sea around April 20, according to satellite data analysed by intelligence firm Vortexa. Together, the two very-large crude carriers are capable of transporting up to 4 million barrels of oil.

Reports suggest that the broader convoy movement has helped ferry nearly 9 million barrels of Iranian crude to global markets despite heightened maritime restrictions.

The developments come amid intensified US enforcement operations in the region, where Washington has attempted to restrict Iranian shipping as part of its broader pressure campaign on Tehran. The strategy has been described by US President Donald Trump as a “tremendous success,” even as the latest tanker movements indicate gaps in enforcement capability.

The US Navy has recently escalated its actions, including the seizure of an Iran-linked cargo vessel and the boarding of a sanctioned tanker in waters east of Sri Lanka, expanding the operational reach of the blockade.

However, the successful passage of multiple tankers suggests that Iran continues to maintain significant logistical capacity to move oil through heavily monitored sea lanes, raising questions about the effectiveness of maritime containment efforts.

Analysts note that while the blockade has increased pressure on Iran’s energy exports, the latest shipments demonstrate that enforcement remains uneven across vast and complex shipping routes.

The situation underscores the ongoing strategic contest over control of energy flows in the region, with both sides attempting to assert leverage through maritime and economic measures.
