Mangaluru, Apr 15: The government has approved a major infrastructure project worth approximately Rs 300 crore for the installation of underground MESCOM cables across Mangaluru City Corporation, Ullal City Municipality and Someshwara Town Municipality, Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader said.

Addressing a press conference at the MESCOM office in the city on Wednesday, Khader stated that the project would be implemented soon. Within Ullal municipal limits alone, the cable installation work will be carried out at an estimated cost of Rs 186.45 crore. Similar underground cabling works will also be undertaken in the Someshwara municipal area.

Khader further stated that a proposal has been submitted for a permanent solution to coastal erosion in Ullal. He added that pending works in areas affected by sea erosion have now been completed.

In another development, a new site has been sanctioned for the construction of an ACP office complex. The facility, to be built at a cost of Rs 20 crore, will house the ACP office, traffic police office and an AI cyber centre under one roof.

Officials stated that the underground cabling project aims to enhance the city’s aesthetics and eliminate issues caused by hanging electric wires in residential areas. The cables will be laid at a depth of 1.5 metres and are expected to function efficiently for up to 25 years.
