Sakti, Apr 15: The death toll in the devastating boiler explosion at a thermal power plant operated by Vedanta Limited in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district has risen to 14, with around 20 injured workers still undergoing treatment, several of them in critical condition.

The incident occurred around 2.30 pm on Tuesday at the facility in Singhitarai, when a high-pressure steam tube connected to the boiler and turbine exploded with massive force. The blast caused severe burn injuries to workers present at the site, many of whom were engaged in maintenance and painting work.

According to police, four workers died on the spot, while others succumbed to injuries during treatment at different hospitals. In total, nearly 30 workers were injured in the mishap.

Sakti Superintendent of Police Praful Thakur said that 14 deaths have been confirmed so far, while 20 injured persons remain under treatment. Five of the critically injured have been referred for advanced medical care. He added that extensive searches have confirmed that no workers remain trapped at the site.

Preliminary findings indicate that a leak in the high-pressure steam pipeline may have triggered the explosion, leading to extensive damage and panic within the plant premises.

Eyewitnesses described the impact as catastrophic. Ajit Das Kar, a worker from West Bengal, said the explosion felt “like a missile had landed.” He recounted that thick smoke engulfed the area moments after the blast, and several workers working at lower levels suffered severe burns.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai termed the incident “extremely tragic” and announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. He has ordered a high-level probe by the Bilaspur divisional commissioner and assured strict action against those found responsible.

Meanwhile, the district administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. The company has also initiated an internal investigation in coordination with its contractor, NTPC GE Power Services Ltd, whose personnel were involved in the work at the site.

Sakti Collector Amrit Vikas Topno said the administration’s immediate focus is on supporting affected families. He stated that compensation of Rs 35 lakh and a job will be provided to the kin of the deceased, while injured workers will receive Rs 15 lakh. Medical expenses will be borne by the plant management.

In its statement, Vedanta Limited said 24 workers employed by its contractor were impacted, adding that providing the best possible medical care and assistance to victims remains its top priority.

The 1,200 MW coal-based thermal power project, originally developed by Athena Chhattisgarh Power Ltd and acquired by Vedanta in 2022, comprises two 600 MW units. While one unit became operational last year, the second is still under construction.

Heavy police deployment continues at the site, as anxious family members gather outside hospitals awaiting updates on their loved ones.
