Women’s voice will strengthen democracy, says PM Modi; pushes for early implementation of quota

New Delhi, Apr 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that Indian democracy would become “stronger and more vibrant” with greater participation of women in legislatures, urging timely implementation of the women’s reservation ahead of the 2029 elections.

In a letter addressed to women across the country, Modi stressed that increasing representation of women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies is both necessary and justified, given their growing role across sectors.

“When the voice of women becomes stronger in our legislatures, the voice of democracy itself becomes stronger,” he said, adding that the country cannot delay giving women what is “rightfully theirs.”

The Prime Minister called for the passage of proposed amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam during the upcoming special session of Parliament beginning April 16, warning that any delay would be “unfortunate” and a “gross injustice” to women.

He also sought public support, urging citizens to reach out to their MPs and encourage them to back the legislation during what he termed a “historic” session.

Parliament had passed the Women’s Reservation Act in September 2023, providing for 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. However, its implementation was linked to the delimitation exercise after the 2027 Census, potentially delaying it until after 2034.

The proposed amendments aim to fast-track the process, enabling implementation before the 2029 general elections. Under the revised plan, the strength of the Lok Sabha is expected to increase to 816 seats, with 273 seats reserved for women.

Reiterating his appeal, Modi said stronger representation of women would not only empower them but also deepen and strengthen democratic values in the country.
