Mangaluru, Apr 13: The coastal region is witnessing rising heat, with soaring temperatures and increasing discomfort. Due to changing weather patterns, fluctuations in temperature are also being observed across the district.
For the past week, Dakshina Kannada district has been experiencing cloudy conditions in the mornings, with light drizzles reported in some areas. However, by around 10 am, the heat intensifies and continues throughout the day. In some places, cloud cover returns in the evening along with gusty winds, but widespread rainfall remains absent.

In recent days, wind patterns along the coast have shifted direction, now blowing from the Arabian Sea towards the Bay of Bengal. As a result, rain-bearing systems are not forming over the region. Clouds formed here are moving towards Tamil Nadu, causing rainfall there. This has led to a decline in rainfall compared to the early pre-monsoon period.
Typically, April sees good pre-monsoon showers. However, as per data from the past week, the coastal region has recorded a rainfall deficit of 71 per cent. Udupi district has reported a deficit of 98 per cent, Dakshina Kannada 93 per cent, and Uttara Kannada 22 per cent. The region should have received about 5.3 mm of rainfall during the week, but only 1.6 mm has been recorded. With high temperatures also reported in Kerala, the State Disaster Management Authority has issued precautionary advisories to the public.
The prevailing heat and hot winds may affect health, and people are advised to take necessary precautions. Avoid going out in the sun during peak temperature hours, drink water regularly, wear light-coloured, loose cotton clothing, and avoid travel between 12 noon and 3 pm. Carry water while travelling or working outdoors, avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks, and consume freshly prepared food as much as possible. Do not leave children or pets in parked vehicles. In case of dizziness or illness, consult a doctor immediately. Use homemade beverages, keep pets in shaded areas, and ensure they have access to drinking water.
