Karkala, Apr 10: An elderly man who sustained severe burn injuries after being caught in flames while attempting to douse a fire in his plantation succumbed at the hospital in Nitte village’s Bajekala on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Jayakar Shetty (80), a resident of ‘Shivapooja’ house in Bajekala. Following the incident, personnel from the Karkala Fire Station carried out a rescue operation and shifted him to KMC Hospital, Manipal for treatment. However, he did not respond to treatment and passed away later that night.

According to reports, a fire accidentally broke out in Jayakar Shetty’s plantation on Thursday. The plantation, which had coconut and arecanut trees, quickly caught fire as the flames spread rapidly through the dried vegetation. Acting swiftly, Jayakar Shetty attempted to put out the fire himself but was trapped due to the intensity of the flames.
