Rain alert in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi; yellow alert issued as weather fluctuates

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Apr 6: After a few days of sporadic cool winds and rainfall, Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts are set to witness further weather fluctuations under the influence of unusual winds from the Arabian Sea. The meteorological department has forecast continued rainfall over the next two days, with a yellow alert issued as a precautionary measure amid the likelihood of thunderstorms and lightning, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

A yellow alert has been issued for 17 districts in the state, including Kalaburagi, Raichur, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Shivamogga, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Kolar, as well as Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural.

The department stated that, due to a low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal, several districts in South Interior Karnataka, coastal regions, and Malnad areas are likely to receive thunder showers.

As a precautionary measure, a yellow alert has been declared in these 17 districts. The meteorological department has warned of the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, particularly during the afternoon or evening hours.

Devotees visiting Sulya and Subrahmanya in Dakshina Kannada district may experience a ‘surprise’ spell of evening thunder showers. Meanwhile, Kodagu in the Malnad region is likely to witness intense thunder activity, whereas Balehonnur and Sringeri areas in Chikkamagaluru may receive only light drizzle.

For now, there are no signs of rain in North Interior Karnataka, where conditions will remain largely dry with sunshine and light cloud cover. In South Interior Karnataka, Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts are likely to receive moderate rainfall in the evening, while other areas may continue to experience rising heat.

According to the meteorological department’s report, from April 6 onwards, rainfall activity is expected to decline sharply across most parts of the state, with a sudden rise in temperatures. Unless the Bay of Bengal system strengthens, further rainfall is unlikely.

While the recent unseasonal rains have brought some relief from the heat, they have also caused concern among farmers. Crops are at risk of damage during the summer season due to unexpected rainfall, leading to increased anxiety among the farming community. Mysuru, Mandya, and Chamarajanagar districts may also witness light evening showers, after which dry weather conditions are expected to resume from April 6, the report added.
