Washington, Mar 28: US secretary of state Marco Rubio said the United States is progressing faster than expected in its military operations against Iran, indicating that the mission could be completed within weeks.
Speaking after meetings with G7 allies in Paris, Rubio outlined the objectives of the campaign, which include dismantling Iran’s naval and air capabilities, as well as crippling its capacity to manufacture missiles and drones. He added that efforts are also focused on significantly reducing missile launch systems to prevent their use in potential nuclear threats.

“We are on or ahead of schedule,” Rubio said, stressing that the operation is moving swiftly and effectively, with no requirement for ground troop deployment. He maintained that the objectives can be achieved through existing strategies without boots on the ground.
However, Rubio cautioned about possible developments after the conflict, particularly concerning the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that Iran could attempt to impose a toll system on vessels passing through the strategic waterway, calling such a move illegal and dangerous for global trade.
He urged broader international cooperation to counter any such actions, noting that countries beyond the G7—especially in Asia—have significant stakes in ensuring the free flow of maritime traffic. While the United States is willing to contribute, Rubio said it does not necessarily have to lead such an effort.
Drawing a distinction between Iran’s leadership and its citizens, Rubio described the Iranian people as deserving of better governance, while criticising the current regime for prioritising military expansion and alleged support for militant activities over national development.
He also touched upon the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, reiterating Washington’s willingness to support peace efforts, though no immediate diplomatic engagements are scheduled. Rubio added that U.S. military resources would continue to prioritise national needs, even if that affects existing commitments abroad.
