IPL 2026: Dhoni ruled out of initial matches, CSK face early setback

Chennai, Mar 28: Chennai Super Kings will be without their iconic skipper MS Dhoni for the first two weeks of the Indian Premier League 2026 season due to a calf strain, the franchise confirmed on Saturday.

The veteran wicketkeeper-batter is expected to miss at least the first four matches as he undergoes recovery, dealing a major blow to CSK’s campaign at the start of the season.

Dhoni is likely to miss the following matches:

• March 30: Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings

• April 3: Chennai Super Kings vs Punjab Kings

• April 5: Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Chennai Super Kings

• April 11: Chennai Super Kings vs Delhi Capitals

In Dhoni’s absence, Sanju Samson is expected to take over wicketkeeping duties, with Urvil Patel also an option for the role. Samson, who recently impressed as a wicketkeeper, is likely to play a key role for CSK this season.

Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, remains one of the most influential figures in the IPL. Last season, he featured in all 14 matches, scoring 196 runs at a strike rate above 135, and even returned briefly as captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined due to injury.

At 44, Dhoni’s absence will test CSK’s squad depth, especially in leadership and finishing roles, as the team begins its campaign against Rajasthan Royals at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on March 30.
