Udupi, Mar 24: Padubidri police have arrested two persons in connection with a fraud case in which a victim was duped using a fake gold necklace.

According to the complaint, on January 13 at around 2.30 pm, a woman named Bassamma was walking near the old post office in Nadsalu village of Kaup taluk. At that time, an unidentified woman and a man approached her and showed her a necklace that appeared to be made of gold, claiming it had a Lakshmi pendant and weighed about 6 sovereigns.

The accused convinced Bassamma that they were in urgent need of money and offered to sell the chain. Believing them, Bassamma handed over her gold ornaments weighing around 2 sovereigns, valued at approximately Rs 1.5 lac, along with Rs 6,000 in cash, and took the chain.

However, when she later went to a nearby jewellery shop to verify the necklace, she discovered that it was fake. By the time she returned, the accused had fled the spot. A case was subsequently registered at Padubidri Police Station, and an investigation was launched.

Under the directions of Udupi superintendent of police Hariram Shankar, and the guidance of additional SP Sudhakar S Nayak, Karkala sub-division DySP S Vijayaprasad, and Kaup circle inspector Ajmath Ali, a team led by PSI Sakthivelu E and Anil Kumar T Nayak gathered information about the suspects.

Based on the investigation, the police identified the accused as Kavya, a resident of Buduganahalli in Bellavi hobli, Tumakuru district, and Venkatesh from Santhebennur taluk in Davanagere district.

On March 23, the police arrested Kavya and recovered gold ornaments weighing 7.610 grams, worth Rs 75,000, and Rs 6,000 in cash from her possession.

The operation involved ASI Rajesh P, Girish U R, HC Krishnaprasad, PC Sandesh Bhandari, woman PC Rukmini, and Shirva woman PC Jyothi.

Greed made Bassamma's brain block... someone urgent need in CASH will agree only Rs. 6,000/- instead of 4 to 5 Lakh worth of Gold...? ... In this deal there is no role for Bassamma's 2 sovereigns real gold.
