Udupi, Jan 15: A case of cheating has been registered at the Padubidri police station after a daily-wage worker was allegedly duped of gold jewellery and cash worth around Rs 1.5 lac by an unidentified man and woman near the old post office here on January 13.

According to the complaint, the victim, Basamma (36), was approached by an unknown man and woman who gained her confidence and later fled after cheating her. The accused allegedly took away a two-pawn gold mangalsutra, a pair of gold earrings and Rs 6,000 in cash from her.

Basamma told the police that the woman appeared to be aged between 30 and 40 years, while the man was around 40 to 45 years old. The duo reportedly showed her a necklace resembling gold, claiming it weighed six pawns and included black beads, nine Lakshmi pendants and traditional talis. They claimed they were selling the jewellery due to an urgent financial need.

Believing the necklace to be genuine gold, Basamma handed over her gold mangalsutra, earrings and cash. The accused then fled the spot, later turning out that the necklace they had offered was fake.

Police have registered a case and launched a search to trace the accused. Further investigation is underway.
